Bro Coffee Roastery Guatemala Peña Roja Speciality – balance from the Cuchumatanes mountains
Huehuetenango lies in western Guatemala, on the border with Mexico, and is one of the country's highest coffee-growing regions. Its farms stretch across the slopes of the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes, and warm, dry winds from the Mexican lowlands protect them from frost. This allows coffee to grow at high altitude – for Bro Coffee Roastery Guatemala Peña Roja Speciality, above 1350 masl. The varieties grown here are Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai and San Ramon.
The cherries are selected by hand and processed using the washed method. The green beans reach our roastery in GrainPro-lined bags that limit oxidation and keep them fresh right up to roasting. Our choice was a medium light (3/5) roast, which gives depth to the marzipan and caramel, lets the plum add a fruity accent and rounds everything off with hazelnuts. Low acidity and a full body make the coffee mellow and highly harmonious.
Peña Roja is at its best as a pour-over – V60 and drip produce a clean, sweet cup. It also shines as a solo espresso, and its dense texture holds up well in cappuccino and flat white.
Quality confirmed by the SCA score
What is the SCA score? The Specialty Coffee Association is a global authority in the coffee world, setting uncompromising standards. Qualified experts evaluate the beans on a strict 100-point scale during professional tasting sessions. The finest nuances of the brew are analysed: from aroma, through acidity, all the way to sweetness and balance. Exceeding the 80-point threshold is the ultimate proof that the beans are completely free from defects and belong to the absolute global top tier.
At Bro Coffee Roastery, we do not compromise. Every bean that goes into our roaster undergoes rigorous selection. The Guatemala Peña Roja Speciality coffee has achieved an excellent score of 83 points on the SCA scale, which proudly classifies it within the elite group of speciality quality. For you, this means a guarantee of objectively measured perfection, a flawlessly clean taste and a unique sensory profile that meets strict, artisanal standards.

Craft roasting at BroRoastery.com
We roast our coffee to a medium-light level (3 on a 5-point scale) to highlight natural sweetness and creamy body without losing balance and pleasant nuances. This roast works equally well for espresso and alternative brewing methods.
All our coffees are roasted fresh, in small batches, to reach you in optimal condition. The best flavour qualities develop after a minimum of 7 days from the roast date – following a natural degassing process that stabilises the profile and allows the aroma and balance to fully shine.
The high quality of our beans and the artisanal approach to the roasting process is no coincidence. The commitment to maintaining the highest global standards is confirmed by the fact that our brand's producer is a proud member of the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA). By choosing Bro Coffee Roastery, you are opting for a product created by true experts and passionate enthusiasts.
For us, Peña Roja is a coffee that has nothing to prove. Marzipan, caramel and plum – everything in its place, nothing shouting. We usually brew it in a V60, but it is just as delicious served as a flat white.
